Phuksundo Cultural Restoration Project
Thasung Choling Bon Temple, Ringmo, Phuksundo, Dolpo, Nepal
Attention: Environmentalists! Animal Lovers! Preserve Tibetan History & Culture!
"Tibetan cultural heritage can be useful to humanity as a whole. Tibetan culture is a culture of peace, a culture of non-violence. Ultimately, a culture of compassion. That kind of culture is really worthwhile to preserve."
His Holiness XIV Dalai Lama
The Tibetan Bӧn Thasung Choling Temple was built in the 15th century to protect the wildlife from hunters. The Temple was built on the edge of a high rocky wall where hunters would trap their prey underneath the wall. The “killing ledge” became a “sacred ledge” when the Thasung Choling Bӧn Temple was built to protect the animals. This protected area around the lake is now known as Phuksundo National Park and is an important habitat for endangered species such as the snow leopard, grey wolf, musk deer and blue sheep. The environment is also a resource for rare and precious plants utilized in Tibetan medicine by the Menpa/Amchi, practitioners of Sowa Rigpa. Lake Phuksundo is the deepest and second largest lake in Nepal.
Over many years, the roof of the temple has caved-in. Ancient wall paintings and other irreplaceable cultural aspects of the temple are at risk of being destroyed. It is important to restore this temple which was built for the sole purpose of preserving life.
Dolpo was once a part of Tibet. It has been within the borders of northern Nepal for approximately 200 years. Because of the Chinese occupation in the 1950’s, the Tibetan culture has been systematically destroyed. Many of the ancient monasteries & temples have also been destroyed. Dolpo is where we can now have a positive impact by helping to preserve Tibetan culture. This is an underserved and poor area that needs your help. The villagers are of authentic Tibetan Bӧn Lineage. Bӧn is the indigenous spiritual & cultural tradition of Tibet. They live respectfully in harmony with the environment and the elements of life.
Please contribute whatever you can to help restore and preserve the culture of Thasung Choling Bӧn Temple, a place built to bring sacred protection to all life at Lake Phuksundo. If we do not act now, this historical and cultural site will be lost forever.
