Help Save a Tibetan Culture
Upper Dolpo, Nepal
In August of 2017, I traveled to Nepal with a small group of very brave people! The journey took us into northern Nepal: Lower & Upper Dolpo/Mustang, which borders Tibet. For many, this is an unknown and forgotten area of Nepal. This culturally Tibetan region used to be part of Tibet and has been within the borders of Nepal for approximately 200 years. It is the most impoverished and underserved areas of Nepal.
My main purpose for embarking on this long, challenging and treacherous trip was to learn directly from the Tibetan people how we can best serve them. Through this, we will be more equipped to offer meaningful assistance in helping them preserve their culture, support their family life, and improve medical care, educational and infrastructural needs.
There are no roads in this rugged environment; we followed animal trails on our month-long journey of high altitude trekking at altitudes of 18, 500 ft. There is no electricity or running water. This is one of the most remote & beautiful places in the world. The region holds a wealth of ancient Tibetan medicine, history, and culture which has been untouched for centuries. Today, this is where we find an authentic Tibetan way of life and rituals. Dolpo & Mustang were once part of the ancient Zhang Zhung Kingdom which was the origin of Tibetan culture. Here, the people still practice the indigenous Bӧn tradition of Tibet and speak/read the Zhang Zhung language.
Helping the people in Dolpo and Mustang is one of the most effective ways of preserving the Tibetan way of life. This culture is of unbroken Zhang Zhung ancestral lineage! Without help, they are at risk of losing their unique Tibetan culture within a few generations due to their extreme poverty and lack of resources to sustain cultural support within the villages.
The world watched as 1/3rd of the Tibetan population was killed during the invasion and occupation of Tibet in the 1950’s. Tibetans are still being murdered, imprisoned and tortured. Within this oppressive environment, there continues to be an intentional systematic destruction of Tibetan monasteries and their traditional way of life. For this reason, the survival of Tibetan culture needs to be supported and sustained outside of Tibet.
This is not the time to stand by and watch….this is our time to step up and make a difference! We now have an opportunity! We still have time to save & preserve this Tibetan culture! Please hold the Tibetan people, and the survival of their ancient culture, in your hearts.
I will personally make sure your contribution is put to good sustainable use. I continually to follow-up on all contribution projects to make sure they are productive, efficient and effective. I was able to experience first hand the conditions and needs of the people throughout Dolpo and Mustang. Connections have been made for further communication regarding projects and updates.
